Kurdish Newroz

To celebrate Newroz, a tradition that transcends borders and nations, let us reflect on its profound significance not only as a festival of rebirth and renewal but also as a symbol of resilience, cultural identity and the eternal spirit of freedom. Newroz has a special place in the hearts of Aryan nations such as Kurds, Persians, Afghans, Azeris, Tajiks, and Baluchs. Its roots run deep in the history of history and symbolizes the coming of spring and the victory of light over darkness. It is a celebration of new beginnings, a time when nations come together to rejoice in the promise of a brighter future. Therefore, Newroz, which has been recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage of humanity.

However, as we rejoice in the joyful celebrations of Newroz, let us not forget the experience and suffering that our people have endured in trying to preserve this precious tradition. From the lofty mountains of Kurdistan to the busy streets of Tehran, Ankara, Baghdad and Damascus, Newroz has often been accompanied by struggle. Our people have faced obstacles in the free expression of their cultural heritage and traditions. Despite repression, oppression and suffering, we have persevered, holding on to our customs with unwavering determination.

  In Iran, since the collapse of the Kurdistan Republic in late 1946, the Kurdish people in the east have faced restrictions on their right to celebrate Newroz as they wish, while in Syria it was only recently that the Kurdish people gained the freedom to celebrate. In South Kurdistan, the joy of Newroz has been mixed with the pain of the genocide of the Kurdish people, the chemical attack on Halabja and the killing and extermination of the Kurdish people in the spring of 1988.

In North Kurdistan, the adoption of Newroz by the Turkish state in the 1990s is a perfect example of the use of culture for political purposes. In Turkey, Newroz celebrations have been particularly tense and repressive. For decades, the Kurdish people have been subjected to restrictions and repression, their right to Newroz curtailed due to government regulations and security concerns. The tragic incident of Kamal Kurkuti, who was killed by security forces in 2017, serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who want to embrace their heritage and culture in the face of oppression to the death during Newroz. The court sentenced journalist Abdurrahman Gök for photographing the murder. The policemen who killed Kemal Kurkut were acquitted.

But let us not forget that the true essence of Newroz goes beyond a naked political merit or goal. It is a celebration of life, freedom and the indomitable human spirit. As we stand here today, let us reaffirm our commitment to preserving our cultural heritage. Let us honor the memory of those who sacrificed for freedom and justice. Let us stand in solidarity with all those who continue to face tyranny and oppression. And let us look to a future where Newroz is celebrated not only as a festival of renewal but also as a testament to the eternal power of the human spirit.

In the spirit of Newroz, let us light the flame of hope and resistance in our hearts, light the way towards a future in which we will always be united for the superior goals of our people in all four parts of Kurdistan.
